Arcane Character Designs
Character Design Illustrations
Illustrator
This personal project is an illustration series where I created cardboard cut-out versions of the character designs from the animated TV show, Arcane. I’ve added my own twist to four different characters from the show, drawing them in my lineless art style while integrating a cardboard/paper-like aesthetic. I’ve wanted to make unique designs that stray away from the generic anime style and see these characters in a different style. I kept the essence of their original design yet took creative liberties to match the arts-and-crafts vibe using cardboard textures, drop shadows and geometric shapes. These designs are intended to be made into stickers so that I can have my own Arcane merchandise!
Process + Development
The main goal was to use very geometrical shapes to make these characters appear like paper/cardboard cut-outs. It was important to keep each layer separated so that they were all overlapping which made it easier for me to create the drop shadows to solidify the papercraft look. It was difficult to choose which parts of their original design to keep and which to remove so that the design wasn't too crowded but still easily distinguishable. The rendering was very fun since there was very little shading and adding the cardboard texture really brought everything together!
